Granite, an igneous rock formed from magma, has been used extensively in construction due to the high durability of the stone. The origins of the stone often determine the final mineralogy, texture and color. As it is impervious to grease, stains, scratches and heat, granite makes an ideal material for countertops, tabletops, floors, and other high-traffic areas.
Typically composed of an interlocking mosaic of crystals, marble is a dramatic addition to any area and has been used since antiquity to enhance both public and residential spaces. While not as durable and dense as granite, marble can be used to enrich vanities, bathrooms, walls, fireplaces and other areas.
Used as a building material since ancient times, travertine is a variety of limestone often found near mineral springs, especially hot springs. The longevity of this material is still evident today in the Roman Colosseum, the largest building made almost entirely of travertine and built in the first century AD. As one of the most frequently used stones in modern architecture, it is commonly used for façades, walls, fireplaces, and flooring.
